God Is Not Asleep

By Andrea Merrell

Indeed, He who watches over Israel

    never slumbers or sleeps.
Psalm 121:4 NLT

Where is God in all this? Why doesn’t He do something? Doesn’t He care?

In times of chaotic world events, people who know God—and even those who don’t—turn the focus on Him and start asking those hard questions. Many want to blame Him for every evil thing that happens.

I once heard from the pulpit that God had been asleep, but He chose to get up early that morning to prepare the day for us. But the Bible says God never slumbers or sleeps. He never takes a vacation or even a break. He watches over us day and night.

According to Chris Tiegreen:

God does not flee from problems; He fixes them. He does not give up; He is bent on making all things new. That’s why Jesus told His followers to ask for God’s kingdom to come on earth just as it is in heaven. Yes, it comes in its fullness one day, but that doesn’t mean it’s only one day. God is not biding His time. He’s at work, today, in your life and the lives of those around you.

As long as there is a curse upon the earth and the Enemy is free to come and go, there will be hard times to face. The Bible tells us we will have trials and tribulation as long as we are in this world. But God is not unaware of our problems. Nothing catches Him by surprise. He knows the end from the beginning and everything in between. He is still sovereign and a Man of His Word. He has a plan and purpose which will one day be fulfilled. On that day, every knee will bow to Jesus our Savior, and every single tongue will loudly confess that He is Lord.

Until that day, know that God sees you. He knows everything about you and every situation you face. He loves you. He sent His Son to die for you. And He will complete the good and perfect work He began in you. Lay your burden at His feet and trust Him to take care of you.

And remember … God is not asleep.
