Retrace Your Steps

By Andrea Merrell

But now, by giving himself completely at the Cross, actually dying for you, Christ brought you over to God’s side and put your lives together, whole and holy in his presence. You don’t walk away from a gift like that! You stay grounded and steady in that bond of trust, constantly tuned in to the Message, careful not to be distracted or diverted.

Colossians 1:21-22 MSG

I rushed into the room and stopped short. As I took in my surroundings, all I could think was, why in tarnation did I come in here?

The older I get, the more this happens. While on a mission, my mind slips into neutral and by the time I get to my destination … brain freeze. I lose my purpose. That’s when I have to retrace my steps. Sometimes I can do this mentally, going backward one step at a time. At other times, I have to literally go back where I started and begin again.

I’ve lost my way in life a few times as well, wondering how I got from point A to point B and what I was even doing there in the first place. Finding myself in the wrong place at the wrong time required retracing my steps back to where I started—the cross.

Someone once said that all paths lead back to the cross, the place where Jesus paid the ultimate price. The place where He bled and died to give us abundant life on this earth and eternal life in heaven with Him. It’s the place where everything changed for all mankind. The place where the old covenant was fulfilled in the new through the shed blood of our Savior. It’s the place that always keeps us pointed in the right direction.

If you’ve lost your way, retrace your steps—all the way back to the cross. That’s where you’ll find the clarity and direction you need.
