Practice the Three Es

By Andrea Merrell

So then, make it your top priority to live a life of peace

with harmony in your relationships,

eagerly seeking to strengthen and encourage one another.

Romans 14:19 TPT

In these crazy times we live in, it’s easy to fall into the trap of discouragement and fear. That’s when we need someone to speak truth and hope. Better yet, we can become that person.

I read somewhere that we can throw a life preserver of faith to those drowning in a sea of doubt. How do we do that? By practicing the three Es.

Exhort – To teach, advise, or strongly urge someone to do the right thing. To motivate.

Encourage – To inspire others with hope. To urge or spur others on. To confirm.

Edify – To instruct, uplift, and build others up. To inspire.

These three are similar and work together, but each has a unique function.

As children of God, we are called to esteem others higher than ourselves and to build up the Body of Christ. There are too many Negative Nellies and Donald Downers in the world. Let’s not be one of them. Instead, let’s speak truth—God’s Word—and promote faith, hope, and trust in the One who loves us and holds the whole world in His hands.

No matter how this life we’re living plays out, we know how the story ends.
