Under the Influence

 By Andrea Merrell

For He knew all about us before we were born and He destined us from the beginning to share the likeness of his Son. This means the Son is the oldest among a vast family of brothers and sisters who will become just like him.

Romans 8:29 TPT

Whenever we see people who are intoxicated or high on drugs, we say they’re “under the influence.” The influence of what? Someone or something other than themselves.

Influence is a given. It affects us all, good or bad. Our thoughts, words, ideas, morals, and character are shaped by our parents, teachers, friends, churches, workplaces, and activities. That’s why it’s important to monitor our internet usage, the TV shows and movies we watch, what we read, and the people we hang out with and allow to speak into our lives.

They say, “we are what we eat.” Makes sense healthwise, but in reality, we become what we behold. Whatever—or whomever—we spend the most time with will determine the outcome.

Since God predestined us (or predetermined ahead of time) that we should be conformed to the image and likeness of Jesus, it makes sense that the more time we spend in His presence, the more we will become like Him.
