Hate is a Very Strong Word

By Andrea Merrell

Here are six things God  hates,
and one more that he loathes with a passion.

Proverbs 6:16 MSG

It’s funny how we throw the word hate around.

A child shouts at his parents, “I hate you!”

“I hate not having a date for the prom,” a teenage girl tells her friend.

“I hate buttermilk.”

“I hate myself.”

Personally, I hate black licorice, wire hangers, and the smell of bleach. I also hate tight spaces, bad hair days, and snakes. Those are my top six.

But God has a top six as well—and a seventh He loathes:

  • eyes that are arrogant
  • a tongue that lies
  • hands that murder the innocent
  • a heart that hatches evil plots
  • feet that race down a wicked track
  • a mouth that lies under oath
  • a troublemaker in the family

What I choose to hate is up to me, but what if I choose rather to hate what God hates (the sin) and love what God loves (the sinner)? Seems to me my whole perspective on life would change.

What do you hate?
