But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty.
1 Corinthians
1:27 NKJV
In her eyes, I was nothing. My house wasn’t big enough. My car not fancy and expensive. My wardrobe didn’t consist of expensive designer labels. From her perspective, there was nothing I could do for her—no benefit to our relationship—so she walked away. I was the proverbial underdog. A nobody.
But thankfully, God has a
different perspective. One writer says, “the world is tilted toward the rich
and powerful” while “God is tilted toward the underdog.” He chooses the weak
things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty. The
Passion translation puts it this way: God chose the puny and powerless to shame the
high and mighty.
God chose a lowly shepherd boy to kill a giant
and become a king. He chose a young, ordinary girl to give birth to His Son. Then
He chose fishermen and a tax collector to be Jesus’ disciples. He always
chooses the underdog—the nobodies and the weak—so His strength can be made
perfect in their weakness. While the world judges by outward appearance, God
sees the heart.
No matter what others may think or say, God sees
us as His beloved children, called to be a light to a dark world. We should
learn to see ourselves from His perspective.
