The Danger of Being Lukewarm

By Andrea Merrell

There are few things worse than lukewarm coffee. All you coffee drinkers will understand. Those of you who are not … please bear with me.

I like my coffee hot—really hot. When I don’t drink it fast enough, it’s hard to keep track of the number of times it goes into the microwave. After a sip of the lukewarm brew, I almost want to spit it out. Iced, hot, or even frozen, but never lukewarm.

Evidently, the Lord feels the same way. Well, not about coffee but about us. To the church at Laodicea He wrote, I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!  So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth (Revelation 3:15-16 NIV).

Pretty strong words if you ask me. If we’re not fired up for Him, He’d rather us be chilly and searching than mediocre in our faith and sitting on the fence.

Need more proof? Look at John 15:1-2: I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful (NIV).

Cut off or spit out. Neither sounds promising, right?

The truth is God wants us completely sold out to Him, on fire and plugged in to the Source. There’s no such thing as drifting along on our spiritual journey—especially in this crazy world we live in. It's time for us to be serious about our faith.

What’s your spiritual temperature? Are you hot or cold? If you measure as lukewarm, turn up the heat. Be on fire for the Lord, and watch what He’ll do in your life.
