Take Out the Trash

By Andrea Merrell

It always amazes me how much trash accumulates in one week, especially for only two people. When my kids grew up and left the nest, I thought it would be different—less water, less electricity, less food … and less trash.

Our garbage collection is very sporadic. We never know exactly what time of day the truck will come or if it will even come on the right day. But one thing we know for sure, the cans need to be taken to the road the night before the scheduled pick-up day. When we forget to take them out, the cans overflow, and sometimes—especially during the hot summer months—the garbage gets pretty stinky.

It’s the same in my spiritual life. When I don’t deal with things promptly, trash accumulates and I find myself overflowing with wrong thoughts, bad attitudes, and negative behavior.

For me, the best way to get rid of all the refuse is to pray 1 John 1:9 (If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness) and Psalm 51:10 (Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit (and attitude) within me).

When I stay alert and aware—dealing with sin and bad habits on a daily basis—He's faithful to forgive, cleanse, and set me back on the right path. He's always right on time and never makes me wait.

He'll do the same for you. Are you ready to take out the trash?
